Screengrabs from the digital edition of the Figures & Fictions exhibition catalogue
The V&A is currently presenting this show of contemporary South African photography with a selection of work by 17 different photographers. I have to say I was less than fond of this show when I saw it a few weeks ago, particularly given how long it has been in preparation for. It has a pretty narrow focus on fashion, portraiture or documentary photography and it didn’t give me any kind of deeper understanding or overall sense of what is going on in photography in South Africa. However, I was curious to hear that Michael Mack (who has published some handsome books over the years) collaborated with the V&A to produce the digital catalogue of the show, something which he intends to focus on more and more. I haven’t been able to see this ‘digital edition’ at work as (tragically) I don’t have an iPad, so if there are any readers that have downloaded the catalogue please get in touch. From the grabs it isn’t clear to me exactly how the book differs from a website (with the exception of the pricetag), but this area of digital exhibition catalogues will be an interesting one to follow in the near future.
